Environmentally Sustainable.

In The Modern City

Research shows us that urban greening is a way to enhance liveability in our cities, is proven to enhance mental wellbeing and physical health, and helps to build a sense of community. Not only are green spaces good for us, but they are also good for the environment by providing shade, reducing rising ambient temperatures through heat absorption, filtering pollution, as well as releasing moisture into the air. What’s more, they offer a haven for humans, flora and fauna.

Water Management And Ecological Solutions

Did you know that only 20-30% of rainwater is reabsorbed back into the earth? Concrete infrastructure has traditionally been used to channel flood water from our cities, but Professor Kongjian Yu believes that we need to work more harmoniously with the land to not only increase liveability of our cities in the future, but to also mitigate floods in built-up areas, saving billions of dollars as well as lives....Show more

Professor Kongjian Yu, otherwise known as the “Sponge City Architect” is a globally respected urban planner and landscape architect known for utilising ancient wisdom to create nature-based solutions to design cities that passively absorb, clean and harness rainwater. He developed the first “Sponge City” 20 years ago. He has gone on to create 250 more in China, and now in Russia, Indonesia and America, helping to tackle one the greatest climate-related problems of our time.

The idea of a sponge city is to encourage the return of nature’s flow using eco-friendly absorbent design elements which retain water, rather than forcing it to drain away. Part of these ecological solutions include permeable pavements, green roofs, greenwalls, and green buildings turning otherwise unforgiving concrete jungles into a haven for people and nature, coinciding with the seasons. Professor Yu has proven that green solutions work and are an important step in securing a sustainable future for cities around the globe.
